WASHINGTON — Conservative talk show hosts and columnists have ridiculed an 11-year-old Washington state boy's account of his mother's death as a "sob story" exploited by the White House and congressional Democrats like a "kiddie shield" to defend their health care legislation.

Marcelas Owens , whose mother got sick, lost her job, lost her health insurance and died, said Thursday he's taking the attacks from Rush Limbaugh , Glenn Beck and Michelle Malkin in stride.

"My mother always taught me they can have their own opinion but that doesn't mean they are right," Owens, who lives in Seattle , said in an interview.

Owens' grandmother, Gina, who watched her daughter die, isn't quite so generous.

"These are adults, and he is an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother," Gina Owens said. "They should be ashamed."

Sen. Patty Murray , D- Wash. , told Marcelas Owens' story to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House health care summit last month. Murray also has spoken about it on the Senate floor. Last week, Owens was in the nation's capital to speak at a health care rally and to meet with Senate Democratic leadership.

Limbaugh, Beck and Malkin are skeptical about the story, saying there were other forms of medical help available after Owens' mother, Tifanny, lost her health insurance. They lambasted Democrats for using the story.

"Now this is unseemly, exploitative, an 11-year-old boy being forced to tell his story all over just to benefit the Democrat Party and Barack Obama ," Limbaugh said on March 12 , according to a transcript his show. "And, I would say this to Marcelas Owens : 'Well, your mom would still have died, because Obamacare doesn't kick in until 2014.'"

Beck, according to a transcript of his March 15 show, pointed out that Owens' recent trip to Washington was paid for by Healthcare of America, a group that has been lobbying for a health care overhaul.

"That's the George Soros-funded Obama-approved group fighting for health care," Beck said. "Since all of the groups are so concerned and involved now, may I ask where were you when Marcelas' mother was vomiting blood?"

Beck, who's from Mount Vernon, Wash. , said there were plenty of programs in Washington state that could have helped Tifanny Owens .

Malkin dismissed Marcelas Owens as "one of Obama's youngest lobbyists" who has been "goaded by a left-wing activist grandmother," promoted by Murray and has become a regular on the "pro-Obamacare circuit."

Malkin also suggested there were other programs that could have helped Tifanny Owens , adding, "It's not clear that additional doctors' visits in the subsequent months would have prevented her death."

Tifanny Owens died in June 2007 of pulmonary hypertension, which is described as high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs that can lead to heart failure. The disease is considered rare. While there's no cure, it can be treated.

The treatments can cost as much as $100,000 a year and must be "consistent and constant," said Katie Kroner , the director of advocacy and awareness for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association .

"It's extremely important to have health coverage," she said.

Owens was an assistant manager at a fast food restaurant when she became sick in September 2006 . As she became sicker, she missed work and was eventually fired, leaving her without health insurance. She was treated twice in an emergency room and died at age 27 after a week of unconsciousness. Gina Owens has custody of Marcelas and his two younger sisters.

Gina Owens said her daughter didn't qualify for Medicaid . State officials said that without knowing the details, it was impossible to speculate on whether Tifanny Owens would have qualified.

Tifanny Owens might have been eligible for Washington state's basic health care plan, which is aimed at the working poor. The plan has had a long waiting list for some time, said Sharon Michael of the Washington state Health Care Authority .

"Right now, we have 100,000 people on the wait list," Michael said.

Limbaugh has gone after young people before. In 2007, he told listeners that Democrats were exploiting an 18-year-old Yup'ik Eskimo and that her congressional testimony of global warming made him want to "puke."

Murray said she was appalled at how vicious the health care debate has become.

"The mom in me is getting really mad," she said. "You don't tear apart an 11-year-old because his mom died."

Marcelas Owens said he'll never know if his mother might have lived if she had health insurance.

"At least if she had it she would've had a fighting chance," he said.

This child was used as a prop by Obama and the point was noted, this is not attacking the child, it is simply pointing out his use as a prop. The family should apologize to this child.

Conservatives have a long history of attacking ordinary american citizens.
remember when they made fun of the lady that had to use her sisters dentures.
"the constitution doesnt give you the right to teeth."

how about rush attacking micheal j fox saying he was faking parkinsons.

or coulter attacking the 911 widows
of beck saying he hated the 911 familys and the katrina victims were scumbags.

here is the right wing attacking a defenseless Parkinson patient simply cause he is fighting for health care.

remember the right winger ripping up that ladies rosa parks poster at the health care town hall.

remember the right wingers attacking obamas wife michelle making fun of her arms, calling an escaped guerrilla one of michelles relatives. No one attacked bush's wife while he was president.

This is how the right treats every day average americans.

Cause just like this boy, they dont give a crap about you. You are not their base. Their base is the top 2% and everyone else can go F themselves.

I have never met a more unamerican bunch in my life.
IT goes far beyond ideological disagreement with how childish and attacking they are.
IT goes far beyond ideological disagreement with how they have tried to block every effort to end this recession.

the left never did that crap with the wars.

the right would sooner see you die than they lose one solitary dime.
Cause they couldnt give a crap about either america or you, they juts want her wealth and they will move to dubai to live with haliburton and cheney.

Yeah, let's stop abusing "average" Americans like you suggest. Mike Fox, Michelle Obama. It's not like they're in the public eye.(NOTE SARCASM HERE) Celebrities and first ladies have been attacked since time began......maybe you forget about Barbara Bush being called "bugeyed" by the left even though she was suffering from a severe medical condition. And you left wingers NEVER made fun of Nancy Reagan for advising the President about his horoscope readings. Or making fun of Betty Ford for being a drunk when you try to tell everyone else "Alchoholism is not a liestyle desicion but a disease". EVERY PUBLIC FIGURE IS REDICULED! Most people find it funny and often revealing about the people being talked about and it's been done by comedians and the media for over 200 years in this country. "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"

Conservatives have a long history of attacking ordinary american citizens.

......and the Democrats, Progressives, and liberals....never do the same......please at least let us all be honest and admit both side attack.

In this point, this young man was used as a prop and it was wrong. When someone, anyone is inserted into the discussion, they become part of the discussion, not exempt.

As should the president for using him as a prop.........

As a point.....like it or not.....the health care bill does not kick in for four (4) years....even though we will pay for the first four (4) years.....

Where is the outrage on this fact?

What would Obama say if an insurance company collected premiums for four (4) years before covering an individual? Where is the indignation there? O' I guess it is different when we attach Obama to the equation?

To use all of these personal stories makes me even madder........both side can find individual stories to support their position(s), so after awhile it seems the point is lost.

First off, I am disabled and on Social Security and Medicare For those of you who might think I am sponging off the Government, I worked at my own business making over $200,000 taxable per year for over 20 years and it was not unusual to put in 16+ hour days. During the recession of the early 90's I had many customers that couldn't pay so I had to make up these bad debts by working more hours, buying more advertising, and more hours. I took 0 days off between 10/92-4/93. That includes Thanksgiving and Christmas but I had a family to support. Now for the thanks of all the FICA I paid in I get a whopping 1270 per month with 96.50 being taken out for Medicare and another 74.90 taken out for a part D plan where I am still responable for nearly $4000 worth of medicine when I fall into the "hole". This is what Government run healthcare looks like.

Now you might ask yourself what does this have to do with Marcellus, Beck, and Limbaugh?

Simply this: Beck and Limbaugh attacked the Liberals just like they always do. They didn't attack that poor little boy. They didn't drag that little boy around the country and use him for their own purposes. They attacked the left wing users taking advantage of this little boy's plight. They propped him up on TV, made sure he was dresses very nicely, and said just what they wanted him to. Thankfully he wasn't prompted by Vice President Biden. Anything might have happened then. Would anyone been impressed if he wore what he wears to school everyday....droopy pants, t-shirt, and basketball shoes. If you think that's racist, go to a pedominately white middle school and that's what all the cool kids are wearing. Wait, he probably doesn't get a chance to go to school while he's being shuttled around the county by a K-Street lobby

I have the same disease I know first hand the expense of treating this disease you not only have medication, doctor visits, travel to and from doctor, but the majority of us have other health problems along with the PH. I have sleep apnea, thyroid disease, fibromyalgia, and lupus. so you have the added expense of treating your other problems too. If I did not qualify for the Medicare I am on because of being disabled there is no way I could afford even two of my medications. the high cost of treatment and medications here in the US make it where if you do not qualify for help your otta luck and yes there are churches and organizations that will help but the majority of the time there is a limit on how much they will spend or how long they will help you.

Have you talked to the drug companies? Sometimes they can help, they might have an assistance program
